A fall in a US hospital is on Medicare’s no pay list, so the hospital absorbs the costs. The fall detection for elderly patients that catches one is free on GitHub, MIT licensed.
Falls and trauma sit on the federal hospital acquired conditions list. When the injury was not present on admission the hospital does not get the higher payment for treating it, so the ward absorbs what the fall costs.
It reads an ordinary camera feed, tracks a pose skeleton on every person in frame, and an LSTM decides whether what it just saw was a fall. It warns first and confirms second, so bending down is not an alarm and neither is sitting on the floor.
Multi person, multi camera, real time, and it runs with CUDA disabled on a normal CPU. MIT licensed, 353 stars, and the method behind it is a peer reviewed SPIE Medical Imaging paper rather than a weekend demo.
Send this to whoever covers nights on a ward, or to the student who wants a final year project somebody has already deployed.
Comment WATCH and I’ll send it over.
