Project Description:
The project will involve improvising a commercially available IoT (Internet of Things) platform such as raspberry Pi to equip it with non-intrusive sensors to detect for fall in the bathroom. Studies have shown that falling in the bathroom is a common challenge especially for elderly living alone. However, wearable devices are probably not the best solution, neither are video cameras due to privacy concern. With the advent of IoT and sensor technologies, you can design and build a low-cost, non-intrusive and simple to install fall detection system in the bathroom with the ability to generate a remote alert in the event of positive detection. Using wifi-enabled platform such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino, external PIR sensors can be used for such detection.
– To study different techniques to detect for fall in a non-intrusive manner,
– To design and build a proof of concept prototype to demonstrate how this can be implemented in low cost,
– To extend the basic detection system to allow remote notification (e.g. with voice/message notification in the event of a positive detection.
