Contactless & Wireless Fall Detection by KARDIAN

99% Accurate. 96% False alarm free.

Kardian utilizes IR-UWB RADAR technology to accurate detect falls – including sliding falls, slip and falls, sit-ups and severe falls all without any wearable, any battery, pressure pads or cameras.

Every second of every day in the US, an older adult falls, making falls the number one cause of injuries and death among older Americans. In 2014 alone, Americans experienced 29 million falls causing 7 million injuries and costing an estimated $31 billion in annual Medicare costs.

The problem is even more serious in bathrooms. 4 out of 5 injuries that occur in bathrooms are caused by falls. 33% of seniors required hospital admission following a bathroom fall.

For the past 15 years, fall detection has been largely dominated by wearables or pressure pads. Most home applications uses wearables since they are easy to maintain and does not require pad replacements every few months. However, wearables – even the very best of them, are only “95% accurate” at detecting falls. It may seem like an acceptable number at first, but the 5% includes not being able to detect “sliding falls” where users fall slowly – such as fainting or falling after grabbing onto a chair/table.

The 5% is simply not acceptable for medical institutions and nursing homes. Therefore they have relied mostly on pressure pad based fall detection systems. These are accurate, but can have a lot of false alarms, are usually very expensive to buy and also to maintain as they need the pads to be replaced every few months.

When it comes to bathrooms, these technologies are not adequate or useful. Pressure pads for example auto-alerts a caretaker when there is no pressure on the seat. It doesn’t mean that the user fell, it just means that they are not sitting on the toilet seat anymore. Wearables have poor accuracy when it comes to falls from a chair – such as a toilet seat.

KARDIAN uses ground breaking IR-UWB RADAR technology that scans an area for potential falls 20,000 times per second. The data is collected and analyzed within its embedded algorithm (no need for internet connection) and determines falls. It can also see if someone has sat up from their bed or seat and if they fell – including slip and fall, severe fall and sliding fall.

It can also provide post-fall monitoring which cans for movement (movement index) and respiration (breathing) rate.

Once a fall is confirmed, it automatically sends an alert to the designated care taker via dedicated mobile app.
