Juice doesn’t have to be a “dirty” word, what with all the reported excessive weight gain and health gurus telling you not to touch it with a barge pole, but this green juice recipe remains a weekly joy for us. I make an effort to introduce different ways to enjoy fruits and vegetables; homemade green juice is the perfect way to boost our intake of antioxidant nutrients.

You do lose the fibre in the fruits and vegetables when you make a homemade juice, but as long as you’re getting plenty of fibre in your diet from other sources, I think it’s okay to include low sugar juices in your diet. It’s about the right mix of vegetables and fruits.

If you feel like you could do with an antioxidant boost, want to avoid added sugars or just drench your body in healthy and refreshing ingredients, then this green juice recipe will hit the spot.

How To Make Green Juice – Step By Step

step by by step preparation shots of how to make a green juice in a juicer at home

  1. Wash all the vegetables and fruits thoroughly. I like to use my brush for the celery (Images 1-3)
  2. Prep your fruits and vegetables according to your juicer’s instructions (Images 4-5)
  3. Juice the softer vegetables and fruits first on low speed (Images 6-7)
  4. Follow by juicing the harder vegetables and fruits on high speed (Images 8-9)
  5. Once done (Image 10), add ice, stir well and enjoy immediately

Is this Green Juice Savory or Sweet?

Even though this green juice has kale, cucumber, and celery, it’s not overly savoury and the kale certainly isn’t the prominent flavour. The apples and lime give a delicious sweet and tangy flavour that balances everything out and the ginger gives such a delicious warm heat and kick.

Storage Tips

This green juice will keep well in the fridge well-sealed for 1-2 days; however, to get the most of the nutrition and freshness, it’s best to drink it immediately and make a fresh batch every time.

Other Green Fruit and Veggies You Could Use

If you’re looking for more green juice inspiration, you can try incorporating different fruit and veggies is a great idea so you don’t get bored. Here are some ideas of what you can use and remember you can stir in different spices such as turmeric, hemp powder or whatever you fancy for an added boost! Here are a handful of ingredients we play around with at home:

  • Spinach
  • Oranges
  • Kiwi
  • Pears
  • Watercress

Health Benefits of Green Juice

The nutrients in green juice will vary depending on what fruit and veggies you choose to put in it. Remember, try to balance fruit and vegetables, especially if you are making this regularly. Fruit contains sugar even if it is naturally present, so having a balance of veggies is essential. A general rule of thumb is at least three vegetables for one piece of fruit.
